The precise compensating level with horizontal circle was made in 1960. The instrument has a sensitive mechanical compensator built in, giving the level the shape of a periscope. The compensator takes up most of the space of the vertical pipe. The micrometer screw is used to operate the pentagonal prism, the graduation unit of the micrometer is 0.05 mm. The characteristic crosshairs, which split into a wedge, enable precise sighting of the staff lines with a half-centimeter division. The micrometer can be attached with a clamping screw so that the instrument can be used as a level of normal precision.
The horizontal circle has a sexagesimal division with a graduation unit of 10', which, in combination with the Reichenbach distance meter, serves for less precise polar measurements. The division is read through a line microscope.
The instrument is a legend among precise levels. Its functionality and precision are the reason why it has been used for many decades in the measurement of height nets, and especially in engineering geodesy. You can still see it on a building site today. The instrument is in the same condition as when it was originally taken out of service.
